During a memorable ceremonial occasion, there was one moment when Prince Harry finally found himself outshining his elder brother, Prince William, and he felt immense pride at doing so.
In 2006, Prince Harry officially earned the role of Second Lieutenant Wales of the Blues and Royals and during the occasion which marks the completion of training, Prince William had to salute him as he did so.
The documented moment marked, in one respect, Harry finally “outranking” his brother in the Royal Family, even though William was higher up in the line of succession than Harry.
Prince Harry explored in his memoir, Spare, the many ways in which he felt his brother had succeeded him in achievements, including academically, and how they were both characterised in the media.
Throughout his childhood and adulthood, Prince Harry found some difficulties in his relationship with his brother, born out of the dynamic of the “heir” and “spare”.
In his book, Spare, Harry explained in that memorable moment, Prince William “couldn’t resort to his typical attitude when we were sharing an institution, couldn’t pretend not to know me – or he’d be insubordinate.”
This meant that “for one brief moment, Spare outranked Heir” and it was a moment that Harry seemed to take a lot of pride in from his description in the memoir.
In Harry’s book, he often refers to the Prince of Wales as his “beloved brother” but also “arch nemesis”.
Speaking about their relationship he wrote: “In some ways he was my mirror, in some ways he was my opposite.”
According to Spare, Harry also believed he had been “brought into this world in case something happened” to his older brother.
Regarding school memories, Prince Harry also revealed: “For Willy, it was pure agony to wear the same blazer, the same tight shorts, as me. And now, to attend the same school, was pure murder.”
The Duke’s decision to attend King Charles’s Coronation, even without his wife Meghan, brought hopes of reconciliation from fans of the Royal Family.
However, Harry soon travelled back to California to be with his family after the service in May, 2023.
The date of the Coronation coincided with the birthday of his son Prince Archie, who turned four years old on the same day as King Charles was crowned.
