Wimbledon 2025: Top Seed Aryna Sabalenka Overcomes Early Resistance from Emma Raducanu in Straight Sets Victory

In a tournament already marked by upsets—with four of the top five women’s seeds eliminated before the fourth round—World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon 2025 after defeating British hopeful Emma Raducanu, 7–6(6), 6–4, in a tightly contested third-round match on Friday.

Despite what the straight-sets scoreline may suggest, Sabalenka faced considerable resistance from Raducanu, who showed grit and flashes of brilliance in front of a raucous home crowd on Centre Court. The match was delayed by nearly an hour due to the conclusion of Carlos Alcaraz’s four-set win over Jan-Lennard Struff, but the pause appeared to have no negative impact on either player’s intensity.

Raducanu began strongly, breaking early and surging to a 4–2 lead in the opening set. Her return game was especially effective, as she handled Sabalenka’s powerful serve with composure and precision. Mixing slices and sharp angles, Raducanu moved the top seed around the court and forced several errors. The British No. 1 also found vocal support from the Centre Court crowd, who rallied behind her at every point.

However, Sabalenka began to claw her way back. A pivotal moment came when a shot initially ruled out was shown by Hawk-Eye to have clipped the line by just 0.4 millimeters, shaking Raducanu’s momentum and allowing Sabalenka to pull within one game. The Belarusian then capitalized, winning three consecutive games to take a 5–4 lead.

Raducanu, battling what appeared to be a minor knee issue after a misstep on a cross-court return, showed incredible resilience. She saved seven set points to level the score at 5–5 and even went up 6–5, heightening anticipation for a potential upset. But Sabalenka’s experience under pressure ultimately prevailed. A perfectly executed lob leveled the set at 6–6 and sent it into a tiebreaker, where she edged Raducanu 8–6.

The second set mirrored the first in competitiveness. Although Raducanu continued to push Sabalenka, particularly with aggressive returns and court coverage, the top seed maintained her composure and closed out the set 6–4 to secure the win in just under two hours.

Sabalenka now advances to the fourth round, still in pursuit of her first Wimbledon title. For Raducanu, the loss was disappointing but not without merit, as she displayed the form and mental toughness reminiscent of her 2021 US Open run.

Wimbledon 2025 continues to deliver dramatic storylines and high-quality tennis, with the women’s draw now wide open following several high-profile exits.
