Obama Breaks His Silence on Trump’s Controversial Presidency
Former President Barack Obama has publicly addressed the state of U.S. leadership under Donald Trump, expressing deep concern over what he called an “unimaginable” presidency. Speaking at Hamilton College on Thursday, Obama criticized several key aspects of the Trump administration, including efforts to significantly reduce the size of the federal government, suppress protestors, tighten immigration policies, and undermine press freedom.
“It’s unimaginable that the same parties who are silent now would have tolerated behavior like that from me, or a whole bunch of my predecessors,” Obama said, signaling frustration over what he perceives as a double standard in political accountability.
While the former president has largely stayed out of the political spotlight since leaving office, he told students that he has been closely observing developments from a distance. Using pointed hypotheticals, Obama challenged the audience to consider how his administration would have been treated under similar circumstances.
“Imagine if I had done any of this,” he remarked. “Imagine I had pulled Fox News’ credentials from the White House press corps,” he said, referencing Trump’s controversial move to revoke access for the Associated Press after it declined to adopt the term “Gulf of America.”
He continued, “Imagine if I had told law firms representing parties critical of my policies that they would be barred from government buildings — that we would punish them economically for dissenting from the Affordable Care Act or the Iran Deal.”
Obama’s remarks underscore growing concerns among critics who view Trump’s actions as a challenge to democratic norms and civil liberties. The speech served not only as a critique of the former president but also as a broader call for vigilance and
