Patrick Mahomes is speaking out after his father, Patrick Mahomes Sr., was arrested on DWI charges.
He’s doing good,” the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, 28, said at the Super Bowl’s opening night. “I don’t really want to get into it too much, but he’s doing good for whatever the situation is.”
He added, “It’s a family matter. I’ll just keep it to the family, and that’s all I really have to say at this point.”
Jail records showed that Mahomes Sr., 53, was arrested in Tyler, Texas, on Saturday and booked in Smith County Jail. The next day, he was released on a $10,000 bond.
Records also revealed that it was his third arrest on charges of driving while intoxicated. The former MLB pitcher was previously charged with DWI in 2018 and 2019. According to Smith County court records, Mahomes Sr. pled guilty to the 2018 charge and served 40 days over weekends in prison.
Mahomes Sr. did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
The arrest comes ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl LVIII, where Mahones and the Chiefs are bidding to defend their 2023 title against the San Francisco 49ers. Although the game isn’t until Sunday, festivities begin at the top of the week.
Held in Allegiant Stadium, the site of next week’s playoffs, Monday’s opening night had the Chiefs and 49ers field media questions and entertain crowds with skits.
“It builds and sets the tone for the whole week. It’s the biggest stage in the world. Monday night is going to be where it starts for everybody,” Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce told CBS. “At this point, I just love it, it’s an exciting time. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime type of thing that I’ve been able to enjoy a few times.”
