The Golden Globe Awards, one of the most highly-anticipated award shows for films and television series, will take place Sunday night in Beverly Hills, Calif. The star-studded event will air on CBS, with the red carpet show slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. ET. The event itself will start at 8 ET.
Pop superstar Taylor Swift — already in southern California as boyfriend Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs face the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL regular season finale — will be in attendance at The Beverly Hilton hotel Sunday night. Swift’s concert film, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” is nominated for a Golden Globe, and she would make history if it were to win
In what category is Taylor Swift nominated?
Swift is nominated in the new “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement” category, after “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” became the highest-grossing such film in history.
Swift currently has three albums within the top 20 of the Billboard 200, and the “Cruel Summer” songwriter’s stardom reached new heights in 2023 with the release of re-recorded “Taylor’s Versions” of her albums “Speak Now” and “1989.” Swift also reached a landmark deal to distribute “The Eras Tour” concert film directly to AMC Theatres — the largest movie theater chain in the United States — instead of through a major film studio, as is tradition.
The decision paid off handsomely. “The Eras Tour” concert film has grossed $250 million worldwide, more than doubling the previous record for a concert film. Domestically, the film generated nearly $180 million, becoming one of the 10 highest-grossing movies of 2023 in the U.S.
Who are the favorites to win at the Golden Globes?
Swift faces fierce competition in the race to win the “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement” category. Greta Gerwig’s toy-doll blockbuster “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s three-hour biopic “Oppenheimer” are regarded as the favorites to win this award and many others on Sunday night.
It is anticipated that Cillian Murphy, the titular star of “Oppenheimer,” will win for “Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama,” while Lily Gladstone is expected to take home the hardware in the “Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama” category for her performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
Paul Giamatti (for “The Holdovers”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) are also among the favorites to win for their performances in comedic films. Gerwig, Nolan, and Scorsese will all be in with a chance to win the designation for top director at the Globes, while Billie Eilish (“What Was I Made For?”) should take home the award for best Original Song.
