Featured Report: Alleged Overtime Fraud at NJ Transit

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is currently investigating allegations involving NJ Transit police personnel who may have falsified documentation to increase overtime compensation. The probe, led by the prosecutor’s professional standards bureau, follows a prior internal affairs investigation reported in August 2024.

According to confidential sources, the suspected misconduct occurred primarily in 2021 within the Newark Penn division. Officers were allegedly absent from scheduled court appearances while submitting false police reports to claim additional pay.

Efforts to obtain internal investigation findings were denied by NJ Transit, prompting a legal challenge from Gannett, parent company of NorthJersey.com. The denial cited the absence of legal requirements for disclosure.

A representative from the NJ Transit Police Benevolent Association has strongly denied the accusations, emphasizing full cooperation by officers and asserting no policy or legal violations occurred.
