Angel Reese Shares Her Post-Injury Routine: Healing, Reflection, and Growth

In a heartfelt Instagram Live session that attracted over 200,000 viewers, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese offered fans a glimpse into her life off the court as she continues her recovery from a lingering back injury. The 23-year-old rising star, who made headlines during her rookie season with record-breaking rebounding statistics, has been sidelined since mid-July—missing the final 15 games of the 2025 WNBA season, including the Sky’s September 11 finale against the New York Liberty.

Initially deemed a precautionary rest following a midseason suspension, Reese’s condition was later diagnosed as a chronic lower back strain, worsened by the physical intensity of her playing style. Team doctors confirmed she would be unavailable for the remainder of the season. “It’s been tough, y’all,” she shared during the live stream, her tone both composed and candid. “Basketball is my everything—but right now, it’s about healing from the inside out.”

A Blow to the Sky

Reese’s absence was deeply felt by the Chicago Sky, who ended the season with a 12–28 record—their most challenging finish since 2018. The injury, which first flared up during a demanding road trip in June, gradually worsened despite early optimism about a possible return. By August, it was clear: Reese would not suit up again in 2025.

A Routine Rooted in Recovery

The real revelation from Reese’s livestream, however, came as she detailed her daily routine while recovering at home in Chicago—an intentional blend of physical therapy, mindfulness, and what she calls “plant therapy.”

Her mornings begin at sunrise with light movement-based therapy designed to maintain mobility without risking reinjury. “I stick to yoga flows focused on core stability—cat-cows, child’s pose, some bird-dogs,” she explained, demonstrating stretches during the stream. These 30-minute sessions, guided remotely by her physical therapist, prioritize gentle motion over exertion.

She also incorporates swimming several times a week. “The water gives my spine a break,” she said. “It’s not the same as game-day hustle, but it’s part of rebuilding from the ground up.” Reese, who averaged 13.2 rebounds per game before her injury, is now taking a patient, long-term approach. “Light work keeps the rust off without adding pressure. I’m not rushing back—2026 is my revenge tour.”

Green Therapy and Growth

Perhaps the most surprising part of her routine? Gardening. Reese revealed she’s transformed her Chicago balcony into a lush mini oasis, filled with herbs, succulents, and dwarf fruit trees—a hobby that started during her college years at LSU and has since evolved into a daily ritual.

“Y’all know I’m big on manifesting,” she laughed, showing off pots overflowing with mint and basil. “Watching these plants grow? That’s real therapy.” She finds comfort in the repetitive nature of pruning and potting, which offers a break from the emotional weight of being out of competition. “When everything feels out of control, getting my hands in the soil reminds me that growth takes time—and roots matter more than highlights.”

Reese’s green-thumb practice is more than just a pastime—it’s a deliberate mental health strategy. She credits it with easing the anxiety that surfaced post-injury, especially after missing her exit interview amid ongoing trade rumors. “Alone time used to feel lonely. Now it feels sacred,” she said. “I journal, I read—Audre Lorde is a favorite right now. And yeah, I cry sometimes. That’s part of healing too.”

Looking Ahead

As the offseason begins, Reese is already preparing for what comes next—both physically and professionally. She’s working with the Sky’s training staff to outline a full recovery plan and has hinted at potential wellness-focused endorsement deals.

“This injury? It’s not a setback—it’s a setup,” she said confidently. “I’m planting seeds now for what’s next—on and off the court.”

For fans and teammates alike, Angel Reese’s determination, vulnerability, and evolving routine showcase not only her resilience as an athlete but also her growth as a young woman navigating the highs and lows of professional sports.
